One of the biggest and most popular lines we sell at Entertainment Earth is (all together now) Star Wars. The current line has been shipping to stores since 1995, and, for the most part, they've managed to make new versions of all the originals from the 1978-1985 line.
...or have they? (Warning/guarantee: Fanly rantings follow.)
In George Lucas' universe, there are multiple varieties of essentially the same thing. So sure, you might have an action figure of one of Palpatine's Imperial Dignitaries, but you don't have a modern update of the one Kenner put out in 1984. So I did some research, and by research, I mean played with some toys, to tell you modern collectors what you're missing. And, as luck would have it, there are 10. (The original movie line had a total of 96 unique individually packaged movie figures.)
1. Death Squad Commander (Star Destroyer Commander
In 1978, Kenner made a figure in a gray suit with what looked like the back part of Darth Vader's helmet, but every toy since has featured a black suit. Some reference photos are shot so that it's tough to tell if the movie characters wear grey suits, or just have lighting to make it look like it. Either way, there's no modern equivalent of the figure.
2. Hoth Rebel Solider
Hasbro just released a new version of this figure, but that original 1980s figure with the brown jacket? Not remade yet. There's a wide variety of Hoth Rebel figures to make that, while similar, are all just different enough to make for another nifty toy.
3. Bespin Security Guard (Black)
4. Bespin Security Guard (White, with moustache)
Hasbro has made 2 modern Bespin Guards, one is Asian, and another is modeled after Hasbro employee Brian Wilk. The toy manufacturer has confirmed a whopping three new Bespin Guards are coming soon, but will they be based on the old Kenner toys or something else? Time will tell!
5. Power Droid
Kenner in 1979 made a blue Power Droid. All the modern ones are brown or grey-- get on that, Hasbro!
6. Lumat
This Ewok was scheduled for 2007, and was even almost confirmed by a package of action figure stands with the character's name on it. Instead we got Graak, who looks a lot like Lumat but, obviously, is not.
7. Barada
The 1984 Barada figure has red pants and a yellow shirt with white sleeves. All modern releases from 1998-2006 have blue pants and white shirts. There's an easy repaint.
8. Nikto
In Return of the Jedi, Jabba the Hutt had a lot of Nikto in his employ. In 1984, we got a figure of one in a blue shirt. In 1998, we got the first modern release, but with yellow armor. In 2008, the figure will have a brown costume. So that original Nikto from Kenner still needs an update.
9. Imperial Dignitary
The very first Imperial Dignitary (and only one in the original Kenner line) was a tall purple guy with a big hat who was eventually named Sim Aloo. In 2003, Hasbro made not one but two new Imperial Dignitaries, neither of which sported his thin, pale self and distinctive hat.
10. Klaatu
As seen in Jabba's Palace, the original 1983 Klaatu has not been given a modern update yet. Hasbro has made rumblings that a new Klaatu figure (since renamed Woof) should be on the way in 2009 or 2010, but as of yet we have seen no pictures. So this one you might actually have before it's time to buy a new calendar.
While not in stores yet, Hasbro has recently confirmed the Ewok named Warok will be released in this Battle Pack soon. So there's one more you can definitely cross off your list this year!
